APL opens Spay/Neuter Clinic
This groundbreaking facility will attack the root cause of much animal suffering on a scale never before seen in our community. It is well known that there are far too many healthy, adoptable dogs and cats than there are responsible homes for them. The clinic will provide low-cost spay/neuter services to the cats and dogs of neighboring animal welfare facilities, animals of low-income people, and other needy felines and canines. APL plans to serve groups within a one-hundred-mile radius. Preventing the births of thousands of “throw-away” puppies and kittens will mean that these animals, as well as the offspring they would have had, will be spared short, often brutal lives.
While clinics like this operate in other states, APL’s will be the first of its kind in Illinois. “This clinic has been the goal of everyone at APL for decades,” says Kevin Hyatt, APL President. “We all know that we’ll never be able to keep up with the number of companion animals who need help until the tide of unwanted births is stemmed.” Dr. Richard Speck, the Clinic’s veterinarian and APL’s lead veterinarian, began working full-time at APL on February 20.
The clinic is open for appointments from the public who can not afford to have this service done by their regular veterinarian. Appointments can be made by calling APL at 544-7387. The fees are:
$55 - either male or female dogs
$45 - female cats
$35 – male cats
All dogs and cats must have proof of rabies vaccination. If the owner does not have proof, rabies shots are available at the time of surgery for an additional $6.00. APL will collect the rabies registration for dogs of Sangamon County residents for an additional $8.00. Rabies shots are only available at the time of surgery and are not offered separately.
If you are with a rescue group or other animal welfare agency contact the clinic manager for a schedule of fees and other services that are available.
Call APL today to make your appointment 544-7387. Please leave a message if you get voice mail. Someone will call you back!
