A previous experience must have made him cautious as he will watch you at first. A quiet home and a gentle hand should win him over. When he is sure you only want the best for him he will really warm up to you. Mike is now at the shelter. If you would like to come by and meet him, APL is open from 1-5pm every day, closed on Mondays.

Squeaky
Squeaky

Squeaky is shy, but slowly warming up to the world around her. She is timid but non-aggressive; a person needs to seek her out to help her overcome her shell. Like her father Mr. Cheeks, she is very sweet. She loves to play on her own, nap in something soft and eat. Her impulse is to stay in the background, but if you talk to her and pick her up, you will hear the purr motor running in overdrive. She is very sensitive and may take a little while to adjust to shelter chaos. She needs the exposure to activity to continue her progress, as the bathroom she's been residing in was too peaceful. As she relaxes, she will become a wonderfully playful, affectionate cat. She will probably be nervous with the other cats at first - her impulse will be to hide but as she got to know Mr. Cheeks she began rubbing up against him as well as playing with his tail. All-Star
All Star

Hello, my name is All Star and I am a nine-year-old gentleman. My foster mom says I am nervous and a bit skittish at first, but when you get to know me I am very sweet and adorable. Look, I gotta tell you the truth my hearing isn’t great, I’m probably not the best pet to have around small, fast-moving kids, and my life has been a little rocky up until now. I really need a quiet place to spend my sunset years, where someone will just love me like I am. I tend to be a bit grabby about food, but remember, I was a stray and had to fend for myself before APL rescued me. I’m very loyal and loving, and it takes so little to make me happy a quiet place to curl up and a backyard with a squirrel to watch (well, maybe to chase, too). You know, I’ll bet one of you folks reading this will be saying, “Well, he sounds just perfect for me!” Please give APL a call and ask to meet All Star. I’ll have tons of love to offer you.

Cracker_Anne
Cracker Anne

I hear humans say things like, “Life begins at forty,” which I think means that it’s never too late to begin a wonderful life. My name is Cracker Anne (a.k.a. Annie), and I have to say that I think these humans might be right. Not that I know anything about being forty (yikes!). In fact, I am in my prime (about six years old). I guess you could call me “mature.” But, as far as I’m concerned, “mature” does NOT mean “dull.” You see, I come from a home where I was neglected and confined to a small room, so I treasure the experiences I am now having in my foster home, experiences that other dogs might take for granted riding in the car, snuggling on the couch, greeting my people when they come back home (even if they are just returning from the mailbox). And even though I have little legs, I love to run and play, and I can keep up with anyone who wants to take me on long walks. You just can’t imagine how excited I am about the possibility of life beginning again for me (preferably in a home without small, fast moving children) a life filled with everyday wonders a life that may begin with YOU. Please call APL and ask to meet me

Harvey
Harvey

Please don’t tell the dogs who belong to my foster family, but Foster Mom says that I’m better behaved in the house than they are! Makes it kinda hard to believe that I was only recently rescued from a home where I was neglected, doesn’t it? Well, it’s my belief. I’m Harvey, by the way that you shouldn’t mess up your chances at finding a good family just because you’ve had a bad one in the past. That just really doesn’t make sense. I behave so well in my foster home (no accidents!) that the humans use words like “extremely sweet” and “wonderful disposition” to describe me. In fact, I am so well behaved that I am the first foster dog of the family to receive a special honor a nighttime spot on a rug inside the house! There’s been so much to be happy about these days. I enjoy the kids, play well with the other dogs, and leave the cat alone (to make sure everybody else stays happy, too). I must admit that I’m a bit hyperactive when I’m OUTSIDE the house, which isn’t really a bad thing, but I tend to chew up my toys, and I sometimes bark at my food bowl and carry it around the yard. I’m kinda shy around people I don’t know, but, well, everyone has a few quirks, and I’m hoping, given my sad history, that I’ll be allowed a few. However, I’m sure that my shyness will just fade away when I find my new home and start to realize that life is going to be good FOREVER maybe with you by my side? Please call APL and ask to meet Harvey.

Lonnie
Lonnie

Hi, I'm Lonnie and I've got a story to tell you. Most of my life was spent outdoors ... I was cold, hungry and lonely. I thought the world was a pretty scary place, and it was my full-time job just to stay fed and warm. But guess what I've discovered. There are places called "foster homes," and really nice folks called foster parents. It's really amazing! It's warm indoors, and food just appears magically every day. Can you imagine that? Foster Mom say that I'm a "collector" ... I like to pick up toys and stuff off the floor and put everything into a neat little pile so it won't disappear. I love toys of all shapes and colors, and I enjoy playing with dogs, cats and kids ... I get along with everyone! I still love the great outdoors, but I'm really liking this indoor living. I'm almost housebroken already, and I'm also learning to walk on a leash (although that seems a bit silly to me). Foster Mom says it's time for me to go to my forever home. I'm not sure what that means, but she says that I'll get hugs, and there will be people to play with ... it will be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and food will appear just like magic! I'll NEVER be hungry and lonely again. Sounds like a really cool place to me. Foster Mom says to tell you to call APL and ask for Lonnie if you'd like to meet me.

Mary_Jane
Mary Jane

Looking for a unique and sassy beauty? No, I’m not talking about a supermodel. I’m talking about me, Mary Jane. Actually, I’m just a sweet girl with simple needs - a little bit of playtime, a little cuddle time, and lots of love. I’m happy to say that I’ve been enjoying all of this at my foster home and, in return, I have tried to be the best girl I can be. I’m crate-trained, housebroken, walk nicely on a leash, and play well with the others at my foster home, including other dogs, a cat who lets me know if I play too rough, and a sweet little two-year-old human. I’m a great ball player, too. I’ll retrieve a ball and bring it to you, and if you tell me to “drop it” or “give it,” it’s yoursI mean, that’s an important part of the game, right? OK. Now here’s where the “sassy” part of my personality comes in. You see, I just get SOOOOO excited when my foster mom comes home and, well, I’m learning that I’m not supposed to jump when I’m excited. But what to do with all that love and energy? How do I tell Foster Mom that I don’t want her to stop petting me? I talk. Yep, that’s right. I don’t actually use human words, of course, but Foster Mom knows what I’m saying, which is: “I’m so THRILLED to see you, which makes it extremely tough to sit still, but I’m trying VERY HARDand PLEASE don’t stop petting me!” Foster Mom thinks that when I talk I sound a bit sassy. Maybe so. I'm just glad she understands me. Anyway, do you think I might be the girl you’re looking for? If so, please call APL and ask to meet Mary Jane.

Mugsie
Mugsie

So, did you hear about the neglected dogs in Greene County? Well, you guessed it I was part of that sad group. But I’m not sad anymore! Now that I’m in a foster home, I’m having a great time and I hear things like, “Mugsie (that’s me!), with a cute face like yours, you will be part of a happy home in no time.” And the humans usually use words like “darling” and “sweet” when they talk about me. I realize, however, that good relationships depend on more than good looks alone, and I’ve got plenty more qualities that I think you will like. For instance, I am really good at playing. Even though you may not realize it, there is actually a lot of skill involved in playing ball and tug-of-war and chase with other dogs. Obviously, to be such an expert at playing, you have to be smart and capable of getting along with others and I am! I love EVERYONE cats, dogs, children. Also (and I know you will be relieved to hear this) I am housebroken. I realize that nothing can ruin a good relationship faster than those things called “accidents,” and I’m not about to make that mistake. Of course, I’m not trying to imply that I’m perfect. I mean, who is? Sometimes past experiences stay with you for a while, and, for now, it upsets me a bit to be put in a crate, and sometimes I’m afraid that my food will be taken away. But you know, I was very undernourished when I was rescued and my ears were fly-bitten and well, I think you understand. But the nice people I know now tell me that I never have to worry about my food again. And I almost can’t imagine it they say I may never have to worry about being loved again, if only someone (maybe you?) will make me part of their family. You can’t believe how happy it makes me to hear this. So, do you think you would like to meet me? Well then, just call APL and ask for Mugsie!

Sallie1
Sweet Sallie

Well, here I am at APL, and they are calling me Sweet Sallie. You can guess where the “Sweet” part came from, ‘cause I’m really a sweet girl. Not so long ago I had a place to live, but my human moved away and abandoned me and my dog friends. It might not have been so horrible, but we were locked in outdoor pens and we couldn't get to any food or water. We were scared and starving by the time APL heard about us and came to rescue us. We all got to go to foster homes for a while until we were feeling better and put on a little weight. I have had lots of puppies in the past, but no more ... and no hunting for me either. I just want to be a homebody now. I just need some TLC. I went to an “offsite adoption” this weekend I'm not sure what that was all about, but boy, was it fun! I got to sit in this lady’s lap and snuggle while all these nice people came up and petted me. Everyone told me how sweet I was but no one took me home. Maybe that will happen NEXT week. While I was there, I also got a bite of hot dog oh my, I was in heaven! Oh, and you know what else I got to go to McDonald’s for a hamburger on the way back to the shelter. What a day! I’d love to be spoiled EVERY day. Please come to APL to meet me. Like I told you, I am a VERY sweet girl, and I just know you will love me and want to take me home.

Timmy

Just think, you could be the person to light up my sad brown eyes. Don’t misunderstand, I’m not sad all the time. I love being around other dogs and I’m very playful. Humans are still a little scary. You see, I wasn’t treated very well before APL rescued me. I was at a place called a "dog pound," and they came and got me and took me to a great foster home. But I’m pretty shy until I get to know you. So bring a little patience when you come to meet me. Foster Dad says I should remind you that I'm still a puppy, under a year old. That means I still chew on things, so be sure to put your shoes away! I'm a fun-loving, faithful Beagle, just looking for someone to share my love. Would that someone be YOU? If so, call APL and ask for Timmy. I’ll be waiting for your call.
